Chapter 15: Valentine

We watched it at my kitchen table with the light off.

Brynn sat across from me in her white coat. She didn't touch the tea I'd made her.

The video was low and crooked, shot from inside a locker.

I already knew the first part. I let it play.

The bench. The voice. The laughing. Luc's one punch, fast and short.

Then Chase on the floor, both hands over his face, blood coming through his fingers.

The door banged open and a bald man in a Bayhill quarter-zip came in.

The coach.

"What the hell happened?"

Luc was standing over by the lockers with his right hand hanging at his side.

He didn't say anything.

Chase got up on one elbow.

"He jumped me," he said, thick through the blood. "From behind, Coach. Say he jumped me."

"Over what?"

"Some puck bunny. Nobody." Chase spat on the floor. "She's nobody."

The coach looked at Luc.

He looked at Chase, who was bleeding on the bench of the team that was going to get him drafted.

He nodded once.

"Thibodeau. My office. Now."

The video ended on somebody's shoe.

I put the phone face-down on the table.

Brynn was crying without making any noise.

"I watched that fifty times," she said. "I thought it was a funny fight video. I thought the girl was made up."

"She wasn't."

"I know." She wiped her face with the heel of her hand. "I called you the help. In his kitchen. To my followers."

"You did."

"I'm sorry. That's all I've got. It's not enough."

"It's a start," I said.

She laughed, wet and surprised.

Then she picked up the phone again.

"Let me post it. Ninety thousand people, Finola. It'll be everywhere by breakfast."

I thought about it.

I thought about the comments under my card. A video with the sound off, a guy on a floor, a bald man nodding.

"No," I said.

"No?"

"He'll say it's fake. Or it's old. Or it's a joke and we're crazy." I pushed the phone back across to her. "I don't want people to see it. I want him to say it. With his own mouth. In front of everybody who laughed."

Brynn looked at me for a long time.

"Oh," she said. "I like you now. That's so annoying."

"Send me a copy."

"Already did."

Valentine's Day was a Sunday.

Three years to the day since the floor of my dorm room and the red cardstock.
