Chapter 21: The Final
"Wherever they send me," I said. "That's not a place, Luc."
"I know."
"You're asking me something."
"I'm not asking yet." He lay back down very carefully. "I'm asking after Saturday."
I looked at him on the white pillow with his ribs taped and his hair a mess.
"You can't steal my line," I said. "'Ask me after the Cup.' That was yours. You made me wait two months."
"Then it's a good line."
I threw a pillow at him, gently, on the side that didn't hurt.
Chase didn't fly home.
He'd been a Hobey Baker finalist since January, and the ceremony was Friday night in a hotel ballroom downtown.
Brynn followed it on her phone at dinner and read it out to the table.
"He didn't win," she said. "A goalie from Michigan won. They showed Chase clapping." She turned the phone around. "Look at his face. That's the face of a man who wrote a speech."
Kat laughed so hard she choked on a french fry.
