Chapter 14: Seventy Thousand

"Come in," I said. "I've got bread in the oven, and I'm not burning it for you."

She followed me through the swinging door into the kitchen.

She stood in the middle of it with her handbag held in front of her.

She was careful not to touch anything with flour on it.

I took the first tray of croissants out of the oven and set it on the rack.

"You can sit," I said.

"I won't be long."

She had one string over her head, old and dark, the color of a tea stain.

It ran out through the back wall, west toward the Main Line and her husband.

There was nothing bright on her at all. There hadn't been for years.

She opened her handbag and took out a checkbook.

An actual checkbook, with a leather cover.

"Rafferty tells me you put seventy thousand dollars into that house," she said.

"Rafferty tells you a lot of things."

"I'll write you a check for it. Today. All of it." She uncapped a pen.

"You sign your half over to him, and you have your money back by Friday."

"And?"

She looked up.
