Chapter 7: Lower Wacker
Russ Odom was leaning on the hood of his grey sedan in the St. Gall lot when Ben walked in alone.
He looked the same as always, heavy and tired, with his lanyard tucked in his tan windbreaker and a bag of coffee in his hand.
"There he is." Russ opened his arms. "Come here, kid."
Ben let himself be hugged.
He stood in that familiar smell of coffee and cigarette smoke and made himself breathe.
Two blocks away, Dario was parked with a pair of cheap binoculars, and that thought was the only thing holding Ben's knees up.
"Where's Bellacosta?" Russ said into his shoulder.
"I don't know. He walked into my shop last night."
"I know. I'm so sorry. Ignazio's boys were waiting at the back, and I was too late."
Ben stepped back.
"Who told you about the back?"
Russ's smile didn't change.
"What?"
"I never told you anyone was in the kitchen. I never told you anyone was in the shop at all."
For a second the lot was silent.
A bus hissed by on Francisco.
Russ's hand went to the back of his belt, where the cuffs hung, and his eyes went flat.
"Get in the car, Ben."
Ben ran.
He crossed the lot at a dead sprint and hit the street without looking.
A produce truck came around the corner at forty miles an hour with its horn screaming.
A hand closed on the back of his jacket and hauled.
He flew backward off the curb and hit a hard chest.
The truck roared past so close it ripped the wind out of his lungs.
