Gina drew me into the kitchen before dessert.
The dining room door remained open behind us.
"When did you wake?" I asked.
"Before you did. Before Matteo, too."
She touched the wedding pearls at her throat.
"Why are you wearing those?" I asked.
"You gave them to me to keep safe."
"I asked you to bring them on my wedding day."
She had arrived late and placed them around her own neck.
I let her keep them because fighting felt petty then.
I had spent years letting her decide which fights counted.
"Take them off," I said.
Gina pressed one hand to the pearls.
"Here?"
"Here. They were our mother's."
She unfastened the clasp with stiff fingers.
I held out my hand and waited.
The pearls lay cool in my palm.
One was chipped near the clasp.
