Chapter 14: Eight Million Again

"Then let her come," I told the owner.

Ivy drove up from Brooklyn that night.

She'd asked for the week off to sit with me through the scandal, and her manager had fired her for asking.

"Best thing that ever happened to me," she said, dropping her duffel on my singing bed. "He had a ponytail."

Corbin ran the company from the porch the next day, with a laptop and his reading glasses, and didn't pretend he was there for any other reason.

At five to four the whole staff was in the lobby.

Nobody had told them to be. The owner had only mentioned it at lunch.

I was on a ladder over the front desk, gilding the last letters of the hotel's name, when the porch door opened at exactly four.

The whole room went cold.

Honora Fitzroy came in out of the sun in cream silk and pearls.

The family lawyer walked one step behind her, carrying a slim leather folder.

The housekeeper stopped with an armful of towels. The bartender put down his bar rag.

Ivy, behind me, said very quietly, "Oh, it's on."

I came down the ladder slowly, wiping gold size off my fingers.

"Honora."

"Neve." She looked around the lobby. The new paint. The old wood. "You've made it very charming. Like a boarding house in a film."

"Is that why you drove two hours?"

"I came to be generous." She held out a hand, and the lawyer put the folder in it. "Since you seem to enjoy signing things."

She opened the folder on the front desk, right under Margaux's framed check.

"The prenuptial trust," she said. "Eight million dollars. Restored, in your name, payable on Monday."

"On two conditions," Honora said. "You leave Corbin. And you leave New England. Pick any city you like, as long as it's at least a thousand miles from my family."
