Chapter 10: Brady's Girl
"Mrs. Hartmann called me Brady's girl," I said, "and you stood there holding your coffee."
It was ten the next morning.
Marlene had taken Lottie to a friend's birthday party in town, and the house was empty.
I stood on the screened laundry porch behind the kitchen with a basket of sheets on my hip.
Dane had followed me out there.
He shut the door behind him.
"I know," he said.
"I thought about it all night."
"You said you'd say it properly," I said.
"I'm saying it.
"I should have told her you're not his girl.
"I should have told the whole basement."
"Why didn't you?"
"Because I'm a coward about this," he said.
"If I said it out loud to forty people, I'd have to say what you are."
"And what am I?"
He opened his mouth, and for a moment nothing came out.
"I don't know what to call it yet," he said.
"I haven't done this in a long time."
"That's not good enough," I said.
I set the basket on the washer.
The sheets were still warm from the dryer, and the whole porch smelled of clean cotton and hot tin.
"For fourteen months I was Brady's girl," I said.
"I paid his truck note.
"I fixed his résumé.
"I laughed when he introduced me as his roommate at his cousin's wedding.
"And I came here, and for ten days I've been something nobody has named.
"Then in front of the whole church you let someone put his name on me again."
"Katrina," he said.
"I'm not angry that you didn't call me your girlfriend," I said.
