I got down on one knee in the laundry porch doorway so my face was level with hers.
"Yes," I said.
"I'm staying."
Lottie studied me for a long time with her head on one side.
"Promise," she said.
"I promise."
"Pinkie."
I hooked my little finger around hers.
Behind me, I felt Dane stop breathing.
When I stood up, he had turned his back and was looking very hard at the dryer.
That was Thursday.
On Sunday afternoon I sat on my bed with the laptop open, calling my mother.
The green light by the camera was on.
I had stopped covering it with tape, because the light stayed on anyway, and I had decided it was a loose wire.
I had also decided not to think about Dane's mouth on the back of my neck that morning, and I was failing.
