Chapter 8: The Pond
Katrina's POV
I woke with the swing chains still creaking and Dane's arm gone from around me.
He was already off the porch.
He ran the way a man runs when he has done it before, long and silent, straight at the dark rows.
I snatched up my T-shirt, dragged it over my head, and went after him barefoot.
The grass was wet and the gravel cut my heels.
I didn't feel it.
"Lottie!"
"Don't call her," Dane said, over his shoulder, low.
"She wakes up scared if you wake her.
"Just follow."
We went through the trees in the gray light.
Fifty yards ahead, a small yellow shape walked down the middle of a row at a steady pace with her rabbit hanging from her fist.
She didn't look to either side.
She went past the last row of trees, out into the open grass, and down the slope toward a flat sheet of black water.
"The pond," Dane said.
