Chapter 9: The Overlook
Mrs. Hartmann at the church supper looked at me over the potato salad and said, "And this is Brady Loessin's girl, isn't it?"
It was Wednesday night in the church basement, and the whole congregation was holding paper plates.
Marlene had brought me because Lottie wanted to sit by me and nobody else.
I felt every head turn.
Marlene didn't correct her.
She said, "Katrina is helping us with Lottie," and moved the casserole.
Dane stood three feet away with a cup of coffee, and he heard it.
His eyes met mine.
He didn't say a word.
I put down my plate and smiled at Mrs. Hartmann and said, "I was," as lightly as I could.
Then I took Lottie to the bathroom and washed her hands for a full two minutes.
Afterward, in the truck, nobody talked.
Marlene rode in the back seat with Lottie asleep against her.
Dane drove with both hands on the wheel.
At the house he carried Lottie up, and I heard him tell Marlene good night in the hall.
I stood in the kitchen with my back against the counter and my arms crossed.
I didn't know what I was angry about.
I only knew it sat in my chest, hot and small.
He came back down.
"Come for a drive," he said.
"Why?"
"Because I want to be alone with you somewhere that isn't this house."
I looked at him.
He stood in the doorway with his hat in his hand and his eyes dark and open.
I got my keys.
"I'll drive," I said.
"It's my truck," he said.
