Chapter 20: Thanksgiving
Jace stared at the phone on the pillow.
"Mom," he said. "Are you taking it?"
There was a long pause on the line.
I could hear her kitchen clock ticking all the way from Green Bay.
"I'm going to tell him at Thanksgiving," she said. "To his face. In my driveway. I've earned that."
"Tell him what?"
"You'll find out with everybody else," she said. "Bring Linnea. Bring that loud redhead she lives with. And bring the little dancer, I watched her on the internet, I want to feed her."
She hung up.
Jace looked at me.
"She's going to say no," I said.
"You don't know my mom."
"I've played her at cribbage," I said. "I know your mom."
On Thanksgiving morning the four of us drove up in Gretchen's hatchback.
Kenzie sat in the back next to a green bean casserole and a pie.
Her parents had left for Florida the week before, like they did every winter, and the dance team had a halftime show on Friday night, so she couldn't go with them.
"I've never done Thanksgiving without my mom," she said.
"You've never done Thanksgiving with Jace's mom," Gretchen said. "Buckle up."
His mom opened the door in an apron that said KISS THE COOK, IT'S FINE.
