The winner was the girl from the debate team.
The moderator.
The one who'd reached over and flipped the switch on his microphone.
Somebody had started a write-in campaign for her the morning after the town hall, with the clip of her hand on the switch, and it had gone everywhere.
She'd won with twenty-two hundred votes.
Under her, in second place, it said:
Linnea Berglund (write-in). 1,140.
Under that:
Tanner Rasmus. 412.
"I didn't run," I said.
"You didn't have to," Gretchen said. "You beat him without running. You beat him while doing pharmacology."
She started screaming.
She screamed so long the neighbor downstairs banged on the ceiling with a broom.
My phone started buzzing and didn't stop.
Kenzie. Twelve exclamation points.
Jace's mom. A photo of her laptop screen with my name on it, and the words: printing this for the fridge.
The captain. Doorstop.
Then Jace.
Eleven hundred and forty people voted for a girl who was never on the ballot. I'm one of them.
I wrote back: You told me you didn't vote in student elections.
