Chapter 8: Halloween

I let it go.

I let it go for almost three weeks, which was the stupidest thing I did that fall.

On Halloween, Gretchen chose our costumes, and nobody was allowed to argue.

"Jace is a lumberjack," she announced in my living room, holding up a plastic axe.

Jace looked down at himself. Flannel. Jeans. Boots.

"I'm wearing what I wear."

"Exactly. Zero effort. That's why you're perfect."

She turned to me and held up a brown felt tube with a cardboard cutout of leaves on top.

"And you're the tree."

"Why am I the tree?"

"Because he's going to spend all night trying to get you horizontal."

Jace coughed into his fist.

Gretchen went as a sexy nurse, which she said was the most offensive costume available to an actual nursing student, and she wore her real stethoscope with it.

State Street on Halloween was forty thousand people inside six blocks of police barricades.

There was music from every window and a guy dressed as a hot dog throwing up behind a planter.

I loved it.

I had always loved it.

Tanner had always wanted to leave by ten.

We were in front of the bookstore with hot cider when I heard my own name shouted over the music.

"LINNIE!"

Tanner came through the crowd in a powdered wig and a blue George Washington coat with brass buttons.

There was a pin on his lapel. I CANNOT TELL A LIE.

Four of his campaign guys were behind him dressed as the rest of the founding fathers, all of them drunk.

Tanner was the drunkest.

He stopped in front of us, swaying slightly.

He looked at my tree costume.
