Chapter 13: Filed, You Said

I stopped on the third stair.

My dress was at the top, on the floor of his room, and I would have had to stand there and put it on.

I came back down instead.

Wyatt had stopped at the foot of the stairs with the headphones around his neck.

He held his hands out from his sides, and he did not block the way.

I went around him to the green door, where my coat lay on the floor.

My flats were beside it.

I put the coat on over his flannel shirt and stepped into the shoes.

"Ten minutes," he said. "Then go, and I won't say another word."

"You sent them all."

"Yes."

"The first one, in April. The one of his car."

"Yes. I took it from across the street."

"And the one at the party."

"I was by the bar," he said. "I'm sorry. I wasn't there to watch you."

I did the buttons on the coat one at a time, so that my hands would have something to do.

"When did you find out about the folder?" I said.

"Sunday night. Monique told me, and I went cold."

"Sunday night," I said. "And on Monday I sat across from you in a diner and said I never found out who sent them."

"You did."

"You picked up your coffee."

He did not look away from me, and I gave him that.

"I'd been afraid of saying it for a year," he said. "I thought if you knew it was me, I'd be one more man who decided what you got to see."
