Chapter 8: Kulta
Lars came to lunch on the third day after, and he brought flowers for the housekeeper and a pie for me.
Twice that week I had woken in Toby's study chair with his hand lying open on my knee, not holding it.
He had kept every term.
It was the strangest thing about him.
I had not known that being obeyed could feel so much like being held.
Now I sat at the long table in a clean sweater with my braid pinned up.
I watched Lars Heikkinen cut a pie.
"Rhubarb," Lars said. "Your mother's recipe, kulta. She gave it to me at the church sale in nineteen ninety-eight."
"I remember," I said.
"You've a good memory," Lars said.
"It's my one talent," I said.
"Not the only one, I'm sure," Lars said.
He smiled at Toby across the table.
Toby had said very little since the soup.
He sat at the head of the table with his hands flat on the cloth on either side of his plate.
The housekeeper moved around him silently.
The far place was set again, with a napkin and a fork.
Lars looked at it.
