Chapter 14: Locked In
The four blue coats looked at the gate, and then at each other.
None of them looked at me.
The oldest was a heavy man with a grey moustache and a border pack's silver thread on his collar.
"Sit down, princess," he said. "It'll be a long night."
"Your Alpha burned his son's coat this afternoon," I said.
"We heard."
"Then you know what he said in front of three hundred wolves."
"We know what he said."
"Then why are you still wearing the blue?"
The young one on the left shifted his rifle.
"Because the son is paying us," he said.
"With what? His father cut him off."
"With the grey lady's gold."
"She paid you in Wilton gold to guard a girl on a hill," I said. "She'll pay you in the same way to shoot you after the wedding, when you know what you saw."
"Shut up," the young one said.
"I'm Osric's daughter. I'm sitting the Test. Your Alpha knelt in the mud to me four hours ago, and every border wolf with him."
"We were on the road."
"You were at the wrong camp."
The grey moustache did not move.
The Iron Alpha, behind him, had his eyes shut and his lips pressed white.
"I'm going to tell you one thing," I said, "and then I'll sit down like you asked."
I turned my back on the rifles and walked to the center of the circle.
It was the hardest thing I had ever done.
I could feel four muzzles on my spine.
"Dorian Hartwell shot my father," I said. "He is no longer a Hartwell. When I'm queen, any wolf who pulled a trigger for him will answer for it. Any wolf who put his gun down tonight will have his name written in my book, and I will pay it back."
"Pay it back with what?" the young one said. "You're locked in."
"With the throne."
"You won't have a throne at dawn."
"Then why are you afraid of me?"
Nobody answered.
