Chapter 11: Give It Back

I stood up off the rock.

My shoes were still in my hand.

"You sang at me," I said. "You told me on the ledges you never would."

"I said I never will. I didn't say I never had."

"That's a lawyer's answer."

"It's the true one," he said. "It's the worst thing I ever did."

"Why?"

"Because she'd have killed you. Humans who know about us die. That's the law of the pod, and she's the law. If you'd woken up in the cave remembering me, she'd have drowned you before the next tide."

"So you decided for me."

"You'd stopped breathing once already that day."

I walked home barefoot along the harbor road in his sweatshirt with my shoes in my hand.

He didn't follow me.

Margie was up, sitting at the kitchen table with a beer and the radio on low.

She took one look at me and turned the radio off.

I told her everything.

When I was done, she was quiet a long time.

"Well," she said finally. "That's a hell of a first date."

I laughed, and then I put my head down on her table and cried until my nose ran.

She patted my back with one big chapped hand and didn't say anything at all, which was exactly right.

He came to the dock the next night.

I didn't go down.

He came the night after that, too, and sat on the end of it in the fire department sweatshirt until dawn.

I watched him from my window over the bait shed.

On the third night Margie came up my stairs.

"There's a man on my dock," she said. "Again. Either you go down and talk to him or I start charging him rent."
