Chapter 14: A True Name

I walked out of the station with the hose and the card, and nobody stopped me.

Nobody called the police, either.

Barrows didn't want them looking at what I'd taken any more than I did.

Margie had the truck running behind the boathouse.

She took one look at my face and drove.

By dark, the yellow hose was coiled on her kitchen table between the salt and pepper.

The card sat on top of it in its little bag.

Jet came up the ladder at nine, wet and fast, and stopped in the kitchen doorway.

He looked at the hose for a long time.

"That's it," he said. "That's your line."

"You've seen it before."

"I watched him cut it."

He sat down across from me without being asked.

Margie put a beer in front of him.

"Play it," Margie said. "I want to see the son of a bitch do it."

I turned my laptop around and played it.

When the black tail crossed the frame, Jet leaned in.

"I was faster then," he said.

"You were twenty-two," I said.

"I was faster."

Margie sat back hard enough to creak the chair.

"So that's the whole thing," she said. "His knife, your line, and your fella's backside going by."

"That's the problem."

"Why?"

"Because if I put it out, the world sees a tail."

I told them what Barrows had said in the lab.

Every lab and every boat on the East Coast, in the north cove by Sunday.

He reached across the table and put his hand on the hose.

"Use it," he said.

"No."

"He cut your air. He let them call you the girl who drowned herself." His gray eyes were steady. "Use it. I'll take the pod out past the islands until it's over."

"And then what? You come back to a cove full of nets?"

"We'd find another cove."
