Chapter 4: Black Pearls

I set the laptop down on the rock very slowly.

"Say that again."

"Every night," Jet said. "Between two and four. You sit up there in a coat with a hole in the elbow."

I looked down at my elbow.

There was a hole in it.

"You watched me?"

"You sat in the sleet for nine months to listen to me. Of course I watched you."

The water lapped at his chest.

He folded his arms on a low rock at my feet and rested his chin on them.

"Then tell me what you are," I said. "All of it. I've earned it."

He thought about that, and seemed to agree.

"Siren," he said.

"Like the Greek ones."

"Like the ones your Greeks heard about. We're older."

"And the singing?"

"When we call, men come to the water. They can't help it. You saw."

"I saw a kid walk off a boat."

"Minnow was frightened. She called by accident."

"So why didn't I walk off the boat?"

"A call takes men," he said. "A song sung at one person, close, takes anyone. Man or woman. It can make them do anything. Forget anything."

"Have you ever sung at a person?"

He looked at me with those gray eyes for a long time.

"I will never sing at you," he said.

"That's not what I asked."

"It's what I can promise."

I let it go.

"And the full moon in June," I said. "Your deadline."

"The Courting Tide. The whole pod comes into this cove. Every one of us who hasn't been given a yes by that night is given to someone. The eldest chooses."

"Given. Like married off."

"Like that."

"And you've been chosen for."

His jaw went tight.

"Yes."

"Then we'd better get you a yes," I said.

That night I sat at Margie's kitchen table with my laptop, looking up anything I could find on Project Siren Net.
