Chapter 23: Burnt Pancakes

Mom put her shoes down on the kitchen counter.

"I did it," she said. "Tonight. I had them clear it while we were at the hotel."

"Where's my cardboard?"

"In the recycling." She winced. "I'm sorry. I should have asked you. I thought if it was gone..."

"That I'd use the room."

"Yes."

I looked up at the ceiling.

Three floors up, the princess bed. The canopy. The walk-in closet.

A room so nice that if you slept in it, you belonged to it.

"I can sleep under it," I offered. "Under the bed is good. Nobody steps on you."

Mom's face crumpled.

Dad put his hand on her back.

Wesley didn't say anything at all.

He walked out of the kitchen, into the living room, and I heard a soft thump.

Then another.

We went to look.

He was pulling the cushions off the big gray couch and dropping them on the rug in front of the fireplace.

All of them. In a row.

"What are you doing?" Mom said.

"Camping," he said.

He went upstairs.

He came back down with every blanket in the linen closet piled up to his chin.
