I didn't open the envelope right away.
I held it.
It was heavier than Noreen's paper. Thicker. The seal was pressed into it, not stuck on.
I ran my thumb over the bump of it.
"You can open it," Wesley said.
"I know."
I opened it.
Minnie Westbrook. Female. November third. Lake Forest, Illinois.
Mother: Philippa. Father: Harlan.
That was all it said.
It didn't say a deposit. It didn't say rent. It didn't say who I worked for.
I went and got my plastic sleeve from my coat.
My three certificates were in it. Chef. Housekeeping. Junior electrician.
I put the birth certificate in front of all of them.
Then I put the sleeve inside my notebook and closed it.
"Okay," I said.
Mom made a sound into her hand.
Dad got up to open a window, because of the smoke.
