Chapter 13: The Ferry Out
The Fauntleroy dock was a long grey lot under a long grey sky.
At the end of it the ferry sat.
Eli had packed a bag in ten minutes.
Three T-shirts, his laptop, the grey headphones, and the green rain jacket he had worn since college.
Simon had packed nothing.
He had walked out of his own house that morning with the coat he stood in and a leather case of files.
"You don't own a toothbrush," Eli said, as the Volvo rolled down the ramp onto the car deck.
"There is one at the house."
"Of course there is."
"It has been there fourteen years."
"That's disgusting," Eli said, and found, with some alarm, that he was smiling.
They parked between a delivery van and a station wagon full of folding chairs.
Simon cut the engine.
The deck shook as the great boat took on its weight, and the steel walls rang with the sound of ropes.
His phone buzzed once in the cupholder.
He looked at it, and then he turned the screen toward Eli.
It was a message he had typed to Eli's own number, a minute ago, while parking.
Car deck, row C, driver's seat. Staying here until you say.
"That's the fourth one," Eli said.
"You said every time."
"I said every time you move."
"I am about to move." Simon's hand rested on the door.
"I would like to buy you a coffee. It is two decks up, and I will be gone four minutes."
