Chapter 17: The Car Deck
The ten-ten ferry left the Vashon dock four minutes late, in rain.
Eli stood at the stern rail with his hood up and his headphones on, and nothing was playing in them.
He had counted the people as they boarded.
Forty-one on foot, nineteen cars.
Two of the men in orange ferry jackets had never worked a day on a boat.
He knew it from the way they held their coffee.
Ten feet behind him, on the long bench by the cabin door, sat a tall man in a charcoal coat.
He held a newspaper and had not turned a page.
Eli had not looked at him once.
He could feel him anyway.
The island slid away into the mist.
The engines settled into their long low drone, and the wake spread behind the boat in a pale road.
At ten-eighteen Eli's phone buzzed in his pocket.
Simon: Bench. Newspaper. Still here.
He did not answer.
He allowed himself half a smile for the rain.
At ten-twenty-three the door to the car deck stairs opened and shut.
He did not turn round.
He had practiced not turning round for two days, in the bathroom mirror, with his own face.
A man came up beside him and stopped at the rail, a pace away.
A grey rain shell, with the hood up.
He did not look at Eli.
He looked at the water, and he said in a mild, dry, patient voice, "You left the window open, Mr. Faraday."
