Chapter 8: Mic Cable

"Ginny goes home at seven," Eli said. "After that the building is mine."

The studio had been a hardware store once.

The old tin ceiling still showed over the glass booth, with its foam-lined walls and its two black chairs.

Rain ran down the shopfront window.

A red lamp the size of a fist hung over the booth door, dark, with the words ON AIR cut out of its lens.

Dr. Vandermeer stood in the middle of the floor in his charcoal coat.

He looked at the room as though it were a patient he had not been briefed on.

"You wanted to see where I work," Eli said. "Now you've seen it."

He took the doctor's coat and dropped it on the grey couch against the wall.

Then he took a coil of black cable off a hook, a long mic lead with a steel connector at each end, and let it hang from his hand.

"Turn around."

The doctor turned.

"Wrists."

They were crossed behind him before Eli finished the word.

Eli wound the cable twice round them, snug and not tight, and clipped the connectors together at the knot.

He ran his thumb over the pulse inside the left wrist.

It was going.

"Is that all right?"

"It is the best thing anyone has ever done to me," said Dr. Vandermeer, "and I would like you to continue."

Eli laughed, and kissed him.

He hadn't planned it.

He pulled the doctor's head down by the collar and put his mouth against that mouth.
