Chapter 9: Fish on Shem Creek
Detty's POV
By Thursday the bank had stopped calling.
I did not know why.
The branch manager phoned on Tuesday morning to say, in a voice I had never heard him use, that the matter was "under review at the board level."
I was in the barn with a stack of Saturday's sale bills when the phone rang, and I stood there holding it long after he hung up.
Anson texted me at noon.
Lunch. Shem Creek. One o'clock. I'm telling you before I do it.
I wrote back: Term one. I pick the table.
He wrote: Yes.
I looked at the word for a while.
I had known three days what he tasted like and I had not yet learned what his face did when he was pleased, and I wanted to.
Shem Creek in March smells of diesel and brine and frying oil.
The shrimp boats lay two and three deep along the dock with their outriggers up like folded wings, and gulls stood on every piling.
A white-painted dockside shack sold boiled peanuts and cold beer, and a dozen men in white rubber boots sat on overturned crates in the sun.
They all stopped talking when Anson walked out onto the planks.
He wore a grey jacket and no tie.
Nobody said Mr. Gaillard.
Nobody said anything.
An old man in a captain's cap touched two fingers to the bill and looked at the water.
"They're afraid of you," I said.
"They're careful," Anson said.
"Is it different?"
"A little," he said.
I walked to the end of the dock and stopped at the first boat.
