Chapter 24: In My Own Hand
I walked down the road to the sedan with Ben a step behind me, and I stopped three feet from the open window.
Morton Linwood looked ten years older than he had at the Foundation dinner.
His gold watch was gone, and his overcoat hung off his shoulders.
"Mrs. Crane," he said.
"Mr. Linwood."
"I won't get out. I'm told I'm not welcome on this road."
"You're not."
He nodded slowly, and his hands shook on the edge of the glass.
"My son goes to trial in March," he said. "My own indictment comes before that. The prosecutor says if I plead to the bribery, the cameras and the judge's account, she'll ask for a lesser term for him."
"That sounds like a good deal."
"It needs a word from you at the sentencing." His voice broke. "It needs you to say you don't object. Willa, please. He's my only boy."
I looked at him for a long time.
Behind me, the new light hummed over the guardrail and the brass plate with a girl's name.
"You had cameras turned off on this road," I said. "You paid a judge. You put me in a room and made a twenty-six-year-old sign her life away so your boy could eat breakfast."
"I know."
"You asked me for a quarter of a million dollars' worth of silence. And you sat in the hall with the door open."
"I know. I know what I did."
His face crumpled, and I watched the chairman of Linwood Homes cry in the back of a car on a public road.
