Chapter 15: Four Young Men

I walked the two of them to the foot of the stairs in Jussi's torn flannel shirt and nothing else.

The photograph hung where it had hung for eleven years, in its dark frame, in the light of the hall lamp.

Four young men on the front steps.

Three of them were looking at the camera.

I put my finger on the glass over the fourth.

"Say his name," I said.

Gunnar looked at the frame.

"Marit."

"Say it, Gunnar. Eleven years, and you've walked past him every morning on the way to the river."

His jaw worked.

"Dag," he said.

"Dag Lindroos."

"Henrik."

"Dag," Henrik said, and the word came out hoarse.

"All right," I said. "Now tell me why."

Gunnar went first.

He looked at the stairs when he talked, not at me.

"The house was the first place I ever lived that didn't move," he said.

"I lived on Navy ships, and then on a pilot boat. I came through that door at twenty-six, and Ingrid put a plate in front of me and told me the rules."

He swallowed.

"If Jussi went, the table broke. If I spoke, Jussi went. I chose the table."

"You chose the table over a man," I said.

"Yes," said Gunnar.

"I've kept her rules perfectly ever since, because they were the only thing I could do right."

I put my hand against his chest and felt his heart hit the flat of my palm.
