Chapter 22: Paid in Full
The courier came at noon on Sunday, the thirty-first of January, in a gray raincoat, with a locked leather case.
He was a young man, and he did not look at any of us.
He stood in my grandmother's kitchen with the case under his arm.
He said he was authorized to receive certified funds for the payoff of the account and nothing else.
"Sit down," I said.
"I'm not permitted to."
"Then stand," I said. "It will take a minute."
The table was set for six.
It always was.
Gunnar laid his cashier's check on the pine, then Jussi, then Henrik.
I laid beside them a sheet of paper in my own hand, and a pen.
I had written it at three in the morning at the kitchen table, in capitals, with the lettering brush.
"These are my terms," I said.
"The house stays in my name. I hold fifty-five parts of every hundred. You each buy fifteen."
I touched the second line with my finger.
"You pay the loan in the open, on paper, as co-owners. Nobody holds a debt over anybody, and nobody pays one for me."
"And the name stays on the door," I said. "It's the Isaksen house. It has a table for eight."
"Agreed," said Gunnar at once.
"Agreed," said Jussi, and wiped his eyes.
