Chapter 23: The Blank Hull

Henrik told me with his back against the kitchen counter and his hands open at his sides.

"I sold her," he said. "The hull. On the twenty-third of December, to a man in Seattle. Fifty-two thousand dollars."

"The truck comes for her tomorrow at seven."

Nobody said a word.

I looked at the table, and at the receipt, and at the man I had been lying on ten minutes ago.

"Get dressed," I said. "All of you. Show me."

We walked down 15th Street in the thin cold light, the four of us, and out along the cannery pier.

The net shed smelled of cedar and varnish, as it always did.

Henrik switched on the work lamp.

She stood on her timbers in the middle of the floor, and she was no longer ribs.

She was planked from stem to stern in pale cedar, fair and tight, with her bow lifted and her sides gleaming in the lamplight.

I had seen her in December, half a skeleton.

He had finished her in five weeks of nights.

I thought of every evening he had been "at the shop," and every morning he had come in gray with sawdust in his hair.
