Chapter 24: Lina
Livio came over the table.
Not around it. Over it, through the bread and the gravy boat, and the old capos grabbed their glasses out of his way.
He had me by the elbows before the next pain came.
It came hard.
I folded over his arm and held on.
"Five weeks," I said into his shirt. "It's five weeks early."
"I know."
"Don't tell me you know. Get the car."
His driver was already in the hall door, holding out a set of keys.
Livio took them.
"I'll drive her, Don Livio..."
"No," Livio said. "I drive."
Orsola picked up her coat and my purse and the white china teapot, and then put the teapot down again on the sideboard.
"Habit," she said.
They got me down the front steps between them.
The grey sedan was pulling out of the gate with Achille in the back seat.
I didn't watch it go.
I was busy breathing.
Livio drove the way he'd driven to Maine in the snow, one hand at the bottom of the wheel, and he ran every light on Germantown Avenue.
Orsola sat in the back with me and held my hand and timed the pains on her wristwatch.
