Chapter 27: Ginevra's Son

I took the phone.

Livio stood up behind me on the dock. I could feel him there without turning around.

"Caterina?" Ginevra's voice was thin and scraped out. "Are you there?"

"I'm here."

"He came this morning. At six." She stopped. "Nobody's come. Not one person. My lawyer sent flowers."

I didn't say anything.

"Will you come?" she said. "Please. I need to ask you something, and I can't ask it on the phone."

"Tomorrow," I said.

I flew out of Bangor in the morning with Lina in a sling against my chest.

Livio drove us to the airport in his rented car.

"I can come," he said at the curb.

"No," I said. "This one's mine."

He nodded and kissed Lina on the top of her head, and then, after a second, me on the forehead.

He didn't try for more.

The ward was on the fourth floor of a hospital in Northeast Philadelphia.

Ginevra had a room to herself, with one window that looked at a parking garage.

There were no balloons. No cards. One bunch of grocery store carnations, still in the plastic.
