Chapter 7: Sunday Dinner

Constance Ardmore lived in a stone house in Lake Forest with a gravel drive and twelve chairs at her dining table.

Six of them were filled.

Constance sat at one end, and Chase at the other. Greer sat beside him with Otto in a high chair, and a man in a grey suit I had never met took the seat beside me.

"The family's lawyer," Constance said. "He's only here to listen."

Eli sat across from me. He had put on a jacket and tie, and he kept tugging at the knot.

I kept my left hand in my lap under the napkin.

Nobody spoke while a woman in a black uniform served the soup.

"Eliza," said Greer, brightly. "I'm so glad you came."

"I'm not here for you."

"I know."

"Let's be civil," Constance said. "We are all adults who have had a shock."

"Some of us had two," I said.

She smiled thinly and set down her spoon.

"Here is my proposal," she said. "You will be named Otto's godmother. You will see him on holidays. Your position at the clinic will be secure for as long as you want it, and I will see that it is promoted."

"And?"

"And you will stop speaking of Chase and Greer in public. Eli will accept a fair price for his shares, and we will all be able to move on."

The lawyer took out a folder.

"No," Eli said.

"I wasn't speaking to you, dear."

"I know you weren't."

I put my napkin on the table.

"I have a question," I said, "for Greer."

Greer looked up, startled.

"When did you and Chase begin?"

She glanced at Chase, who looked at his soup.
