Chapter 18: A Full House
Under the dining table, a sock-covered foot slid up Kenji's calf.
He kept his face still and reached for the rice.
It was Soren's foot. He knew it by the size, and by the shameless, innocent way Soren was looking at the ceiling.
"Pass the potatoes, please," said the boys' father, from the head of the table.
He was a big, weathered, white-haired man in a Norwegian sweater, with Leif's blue eyes and a booming, gentle voice.
He had been talking since the soup.
Kenji's mother sat at his right, small and radiant, holding his hand on the cloth.
"Stavanger is cold," the father said. "Not Astoria cold. Damp cold. Wet-sock cold. But the work is good. We start a new platform in March, and then we're done, and we come home for good."
"For good?" Tilda said.
"By summer."
Tilda's fork stopped.
Erik's hand came to rest on Kenji's knee under the cloth and stayed there.
It was cold and ink-stained, and it did not move, and it was the steadiest thing in the room.
"That's wonderful," Leif said, in his calm, even voice. "We'll have the house ready."
