Chapter 22: Nobody Watching
The hall chair sat at the curb on New Year's Day with a cardboard sign taped to its back.
*FREE,* the sign said, in Tilda's handwriting. *GOOD FOR WATCHING. NO QUESTIONS.*
"Why are we giving away a chair?" the boys' father asked, with a coffee in his hand and his coat over his pajamas.
"It's ugly," Tilda said.
"It's your grandmother's."
"She'd be thrilled."
Kenji, standing on the porch with Leif's shoulder against his, did not dare look at anyone.
A neighbor took the chair by noon.
By evening the house had settled into the comfortable wreck that follows a party.
There were bags of bottles on the porch and glitter in the rugs, and Soren was asleep face down on the living room couch with a party hat on one ear.
The parents went up at nine.
At ten, Kenji stood in the attic doorway in his pajamas and looked at the iron bed.
