The taxi idled at the curb, and Kenji's mother held his face in both hands.
"Eat," she said. "Sleep. Wear the green scarf."
"Mom."
"And call me on Sundays, and tell me everything." She kissed his forehead. "I mean everything, when you want to."
"I will."
"I know."
Over her shoulder, in the cold bright morning, the boys' father had Leif in a bear hug that lifted him off the driveway.
He said something low and rough into Leif's shoulder that made Leif laugh and wipe his eyes.
"I heard you," Leif said, hoarsely, when he could. "I'm going to be a person. I'm just doing it here."
"Here is fine."
"Here is where I want to be."
The father looked at him a long moment, and then at Kenji.
Then he looked at Erik and Soren, who stood on the porch with their arms around each other's necks in an unnatural pose of innocence.
He said nothing at all. He only smiled, slow and wide, and got into the taxi.
Tilda stood at the end of the walk with her clipboard against her chest.
"Bye!" she yelled. "Have a good flight! There's a spreadsheet in your email! It's about the house!"
