Chapter 23: Two Tickets
Elliott's POV
The Lanterns walked out at nine o'clock, and Roxie grabbed my wrist before the first note.
We were in the fourth row, with the amps humming and a thousand people shouting.
"I've never been this close to anyone's favorite band," I said.
"They're not mine."
"They're not mine either."
"Then who are we here for?"
I thought about it, and it came to me fast.
"For us," I said.
She grinned and turned back to the stage.
The first song was one Laney had played through my bedroom wall when I was eleven.
I knew every chord of it from the wrong side of the plaster.
I waited for it to hurt.
It didn't.
It was just a good song, played loudly by people who had never met me, and Roxie was shouting the wrong words next to me with her hand locked in mine.
By the encore my voice was gone.
In the cold outside afterward, she pulled my scarf tight around my neck and kissed me in the middle of the crowd.
"Your place or mine?" she asked.
"Yours has the radiator."
"My radiator is a liar."
"I'll take my chances."
Her apartment was warm and small and smelled like green apple.
She locked the door behind us, dropped her keys in a bowl, and turned around.
"Take your time," she said. "We have coffee."
I laughed, and my throat hurt, and she took my face in her hands.
"I mean it," she said. "Tonight you set the speed."
"I want to be slow."
"Then be slow."
I undressed her by the window, one layer at a time.
I took off her jacket, and her scarf, and her shirt, and I kissed each inch of skin as it came free.
