Chapter 24: Nobody Counts

By noon on Sunday Bev's kitchen held seven people and one skillet that never got a rest.

The respiratory therapist sat on the counter with a bag of chips.

Two of the new graduates had come straight from their beds, in sweatshirts, with their hair flat on one side.

Eli stood at the stove with a spatula Bev had put in his hand and a look of complete trust in her.

"Flip it," she said. "Now. Not later. Now."

"It isn't ready."

"It's been ready since you were thinking about it."

He flipped it.

The sandwich was perfect, and Bev looked suspicious about that.

"The hospital emailed at eight," Eli said, to nobody in particular. "My leave is lifted. I'm back on Monday."

The therapist saluted him with a chip.

My mother sat at the end of the table in the same pale-blue suit she had worn to the gala.

The pearls were gone.

She had slept on the sewing-machine bed, and her hair was flat at the back, and it was the first time in my life I had seen her without a plan for the day.

She held a cup of coffee in both hands and watched the room.

"Mrs. Lundgren," she said. "I should pay for the room. And for the food."

Bev didn't turn around from the stove.

"It's Bev."

"Bev. I'm accustomed to settling accounts. I'd like to know what I owe."

"Estelle."

My mother looked up.

Bev set down the spatula and pointed it at her.
