I Was Her Servant for Five Years, Now She Begs Me to Stay novel · Chapter 5 of 24

Chapter 5: Five Nights

Camille didn't hesitate, and she didn't look at me.

"I came to fetch him," she said. "Mother wants him back in the house."

"Back?" Preston said. "Your father fired him. Publicly. Two days ago."

"My father threatened the family's debt. He didn't fire anyone." She slid her coat tighter around her. "The man has done the pantry and the wine cellar for five years, Preston. Nobody else knows where anything is."

"He accused me of stealing you from him."

"He accused nobody of anything. He's ill, and the doctor says so." She turned to me with a smooth, patient face. "Nolan, you'll come back tonight. Won't you?"

I looked at her.

She looked back with grey eyes that told me nothing.

"Yes, Miss Camille," I said.

"There. It's settled."

Preston studied me for a moment too long.

"I don't like it," he said.

"You don't have to like him," Camille said. "You only have to marry me."

She said it lightly, and it made him laugh.

He opened the back door of his sedan for her, and she got in.

"Get in too," Preston told me. "I'm not leaving you on a bridge at midnight."

"I have my truck."

"You came on foot. I saw you from the road."

That was true.

I got into the back seat beside Camille.

Preston turned the radio up, something with a lot of drums, and pulled out onto the road.

The car smelled of leather and his cologne.

Camille sat very straight on her side with her coat folded over her knees.

For a mile she said nothing.

Then she took out her phone.

She typed on it with her thumb, in the dark, with the screen tilted toward me.
