Chapter 8: Rehearsal Brunch
On Sunday, I served the rehearsal brunch with a tray in my hands and a lip Camille had bitten, which nobody mentioned.
Twenty people sat at the long table in the sunroom: Sayer cousins, two of Gerald's board members and Preston's mother, a thin woman with a pearl choker.
Camille sat in the middle, across from Preston, in a cream dress with her hair pinned up.
The lemon cake came last.
I set a slice in front of her.
She picked up her fork and didn't look at me.
"Nolan," she said. "Stay a moment."
"Miss Camille?"
"Is this the same bakery as last month?"
"Yes."
"It's drier."
"I'll mention it to the kitchen."
"Do." She put the fork down and folded her hands. "Come closer."
I came around the end of the table and stood at her elbow.
Preston's mother stopped talking.
Camille tipped her head up to speak softly.
She didn't speak softly.
"Tonight," she said, in a clear voice that carried to every chair, "you will tell me exactly where you touched me first."
The room went silent.
Preston's mother put her cup down.
"Excuse me?" said one of the board members.
"I mean the memory," Camille said, with a pleasant smile. "The third one. He's been helping me with some exercises for the doctor."
"Exercises," Preston said.
"Memory exercises. Mother knows."
Lucille was at the far end of the table, and her face had gone pale.
"Yes," she said faintly. "The doctor suggested it."
"And you'll tell me what he did with his hands," Camille said, looking straight up at me. "In detail. Slowly. I'll expect you in my rooms at ten."
