Chapter 9: Night Three

I knocked at ten, and she opened the door herself.

She wore a black slip and nothing over it, and her hair hung loose down her back.

The lamp was off.

The only light in the room came from the moon and the dim glow of the garden lamps outside.

"Come in," Camille said. "Lock it."

I locked it.

She walked backward to the bed, watching my face, and sat on the edge.

"The third memory," she said. "Tell me where you touched me first."

My mouth was dry.

"Your feet," I said.

"My feet?"

"We were in the room over the garage. It was raining on the tin roof, and you'd come up the outside stairs in the dark with your shoes in your hand. Your feet were freezing."

"And you warmed them up."

"I sat you on the bed and took them in my hands."

She lifted one foot off the floor, slowly, and held it out toward me.

"Like this?"

I knelt on the carpet and took her foot in both hands.

It was cold, and I rubbed it with my thumbs until it was warm.

She watched me with her lips a little parted.

"Then what?" she said.

"I went up your ankle. Then your calf."

"Show me."

"You said no touching."

"Your rule, then, Nolan. Break it."

"It's your rule, Cam."

It slipped out, the old nickname, and I saw her flinch.

She said nothing about it.

She only said, in a rough voice, "Break it anyway."

I slid my palms up her calves to her knees.

Her skin was smooth and she shivered under my hands.

I pushed the slip up her thighs a few inches and stopped.

"Go on," she said.

"You told me to stop talking and kiss you."

"Did I?"

"You did."

I got up on the bed, over her, and kissed her.

She kissed me back at once, with both arms around my neck, pulling me down onto the mattress with her.

I felt every inch of her through the thin silk.

I got my hand under the slip and found her bare hip, then the swell of her breast, and she arched into my palm.
