Chapter 14: The Bridesmaid
Nobody said congratulations.
The teenager looked at her father. Her father looked at the roster taped to the wall.
December fourteenth was written across the top of it in Kerry's marker, with three stars.
"That's graduation," the boy said, helpfully.
"Is it?" Kiera put a hand on her chest. "Oh, no. I'm so sorry. Ronan, did you know?"
Ronan knew.
He'd known since September, when I told him the date in his kitchen and he said "after Kiera's surgery, after the holidays."
He set the wine down on the table and didn't answer.
"The venue only had one Saturday left," Kiera said. "You know how it is. And I thought, honestly, it's a sign. Two big days. We can celebrate together."
"We can't," I said. "We'll be here."
"That's the other thing."
She rolled closer, around the end of the table, until she was beside my chair.
She took my hand in both of hers.
Her nails were fresh. Red, perfect.
"I want you in the wedding, Maur. As my bridesmaid."
Kerry put her fork down.
It was the loudest thing in the building.
"After everything with the video," Kiera said, "people need to see us together. It would heal so much. You could even bring Juniper. She could carry the rings down the aisle."
There it was.
I looked at her phone, propped against the bakery box, its little camera eye pointed at the two of us.
Recording.
"No," I said.
Kiera's smile didn't move.
"You haven't even thought about it."
"I don't need to. Juniper isn't a prop, and I'm not a bridesmaid."
