Chapter 31: Ronan's Goodbye
He stood up when he saw me.
Snow fell off his knees.
"I didn't want to knock," he said. "It's Christmas. I figured you'd come by for something. You always hide presents in weird places."
"How long have you been sitting there?"
"An hour." He held out one of the coffees. "It was hot when I got here."
I took it. It was cold.
I drank some anyway.
I looked past him at the truck.
Desks and monitors in bubble wrap filled the back.
The ping-pong table nobody used stood on its end.
"You're moving the office."
"Providence," he said. "January second. There's a shipping company down there that wants us to route their whole fleet. Twenty of my people are coming. The rest got a bonus and a reference."
"The investors?"
"The old one stayed. He said anybody who'd stand up in front of a city committee in that suit can't be all bad."
I almost laughed.
"It's not running away," he said. "I thought about whether it was."
"What did you decide?"
"That I've been sitting in the same three blocks my whole life. And everywhere I look here, I see something I did to you."
