Chapter 32: The Front Room
The building was mine on the first Friday in April.
The landlord came to the closing with his cane and his thermos and a tan already, two weeks back from Florida to sign.
The grant covered the down payment.
A credit union on Dot Ave covered the rest, at a rate Niall read four times.
He called it "acceptable", which from him was a love letter.
I signed every line.
The closing lawyer looked at my signature and frowned.
"It's consistent," I said.
The landlord gave me the big ring of keys again, the same ones. Then he took one more key off his own ring.
"Front door," he said. "I kept it. Thirty-one years. Didn't feel right to leave without it."
He put it in my hand and closed my fingers over it.
On Saturday morning the second class started.
We took four new teams out of forty families.
A little girl with a hearing aid got a red poodle.
A grandfather after a stroke got a big black Lab named for his old fire company.
A nurse with panic attacks got a shepherd.
