Chapter 15: Vesper's Price
Vesper stood outside the east gate in the dark, in a dark gown with the hem torn, holding nothing.
Her pearl pins were gone.
Her blonde hair hung loose, and her bare feet were cut from the scrap.
Dax got to the gate first.
"You've got a nerve," he said, in a voice that rattled the hinges.
"Let her in," said Maxine.
"Wife..."
"Let her in, Dax."
He opened the gate with a bang.
Vesper walked into the lamplight and looked at the seven men standing in a half circle with their arms crossed.
Then she dropped to her knees in the dust.
"I wrote it," she said.
Her voice was small and flat.
"I read your real gauge, Max. Three years of practice tests, I read it every time, Fire and Spring pushing against each other."
"I knew exactly what it was."
Maxine said nothing.
"A week before Matching Day, the High Marshal sent for me. He had your file."
"He said a bride who reads Null goes to Ghostfall, and a Spring-grade girl goes to his son."
