"I wrote the Null report," Vesper said to the Assembly.
She stood at the foot of the dais with her hands at her sides and her bandaged feet together.
"I read Maxine Rooke's gauge before Matching Day, and I knew it was not Null. The High Marshal's office told me what number to write."
"He promised me a place in his son's house."
"I knew where the Null clause sent her, and I wrote the number."
The gallery hissed, and she flinched, and she did not stop.
"I am not asking to be pitied. I am asking to be sentenced."
The Speaker looked at her for a long moment.
"You came forward without being called," she said. "That counts for something, and it does not count for everything."
"Five years of service on Ghostfall. You will carry water to the gardens that grow there, and you will carry it every day."
"You will not hold rank in any house of the Union again."
"Yes, Madam Speaker," Vesper said.
