Chapter 24: First in the Book
Spring came to the Frostmark Hold in a single night.
I woke to water dripping off the eaves, and the courtyard stones showing black through the snow for the first time since I had arrived.
By noon the whole Hold was out in the yard.
Bram had hung lanterns from the walls for no reason anyone could name.
The cook had set up a table of fried dough and honey, and Perrin stood behind it with flour to his elbows, handing out portions and not saying a word about it.
Elias was on the roof, mending a gutter.
He waved down at me, once, awkwardly, and I waved back.
That was all it was now.
It was enough.
A letter had come that morning, in my sister's round hand.
Asta had been chosen Speaker of the council.
The pack had not wanted her for Alpha, and she had not wanted it either.
They wanted somebody to say out loud what the granary held, and she had found she could.
She had been asked to supper three times by the farrier's son, and she wrote, I am PRETENDING not to notice.
A second letter was folded inside the first.
It was short, in my mother's own hand.
It said: Your room is as you left it. Come when you like, and stay as long as you want.
I read it twice and put it in my pocket.
Now I stood in the courtyard in my grey cloak, the one that had been waiting in my room on the first night.
The envoy came across the stones toward me, with her ledger under her arm.
