"Then we let him think we believe him," Tae-gyeom said.
He was still crouched beside So-hee in the booth, holding her wrist under the lamp.
"Six men on the hill every night, in the open, until the twenty-seventh," he said. "On the twenty-eighth they go home where anyone can see them go."
"And then?"
"And then they come back up the other side of the hill on foot, and we wait in the dark."
So-hee wiped her nose on a bar napkin.
"I want to be there," she said. "With my good phone."
On the morning of the twenty-eighth Ji-an's mother climbed the stairs of Ahyeon-dong District 3 in her good navy suit, carrying four plastic tubs of side dishes in a cloth bundle.
She stopped on every landing to breathe.
She refused to let Tae-gyeom carry anything.
"I'm meeting your mother," she told him. "I'm not arriving with my hands empty like a beggar."
Kwon Ok-ja was waiting at the blue gate with her arms folded.
Somebody had scrubbed most of the red paint off. There was still a pink ghost of the X across the metal.
