Chapter 20: The Ford
Mist lay on the ford at dawn, and the water under it was the color of a knife.
The Marshal's terms had been plain.
Two barges would anchor in the deep channel, thirty paces apart.
Lin would come out on one, and Cen on the other.
The assassin would stand on the north bank where he had stood before, with a hundred Liang spears at his back and no bow.
Jiang stood on the north bank.
He had a bow.
It lay under a Yan grey cloak at his feet, with a notched arrow beneath it.
Three thousand men of the Ninth stood shoulder to shoulder in front of him to hide it.
Across the water, on the south bank, twelve thousand Liang soldiers filled the mist.
The barges sat on the river between them.
On the near one Jiang could see Lin, small and straight in white.
The garrison commander stood on one side of him and a man in a grey cloak on the other.
On the far one stood the Grand Marshal in his gold.
Beside him, tied to the stern rail with a cord at his throat, stood Wen Lanxi, barefoot, with his hair in his face.
The herald with the speaking trumpet shouted across the water.
"The Crown Prince has a witness!"
Cen laughed.
Jiang heard it, a booming, comfortable sound that rolled over the river.
"A Yan deserter in a Yan coat!" he called.
"Is that your proof, Highness?"
The man in grey stepped to the rail.
He was gaunt and pale, and his bad hand shook.
