"Get up," Jiang said.
"Your shoulder."
"My shoulder is staying exactly where it is."
Lin knelt on the black stone with his hands flat on his thighs and his chin up, and the whole Council could see his face.
He spoke in the old formal Liang that the law uses, in a voice so even it frightened Jiang.
"General Jiang Zhanyuan.
The blood royal held you a year for a wound you did not give.
It never asked the wounded what he wanted done.
I was the wounded.
I held the cord.
I ask your pardon, as the law lets the wronged be asked, and I ask it on my knees."
Jiang had been called adequate for eleven years.
No one had ever knelt to him.
Forty old men sat in black caps and did not move.
From the gallery came a small sound that might have been the widow.
Jiang put down the bow.
He knelt too, opposite Lin, so that their knees touched on the stone.
"I aimed three arrows at your heart, Jingshu," he said.
"Those were mine, and I owe them."
"I forgave the three before you reached the city."
"Then I forgive the year."
Lin took his face in both hands, and Jiang let the Hall of Wounds see it.
