Chapter 17: Bought and Sold
"Never a reward?" I said.
The consigliere looked at the ledger in his hands and kept his mouth shut.
"What was it, then?" my sister asked.
Bianca had gotten up from beside Elio.
Her white dress from the engagement dinner was creased where she had knelt.
"Her line crossed last spring," the heir said, from behind her. He was checking his watch again. "That's all that matters. There's a contract. Both heads signed."
"Then why won't he say what it was?" I asked.
Nobody answered.
The old capo cleared his throat, and the tank hissed.
"Bring me the other book," he said.
"There is no other book," said the consigliere.
"There has been one since ninety-one," the old man said. "I've known for thirty-five years and never said it. I am too old to be polite."
"It's in your coat, scribe. The left inside pocket."
The consigliere's hand moved before he could stop it.
It went to his left side and stopped.
The dock capo crossed the carpet.
He had a thick, slow way of moving, and the consigliere, who was thin, did not try to stop him.
He reached inside the coat and pulled out a small brown book, soft at the corners.
He opened it on his palm and began to read, with his lips moving.
His face changed.
"Read it out," the old man said.
The dock capo swallowed.
"Bianca Gallardi. Line crossed, last April."
"Paid by the family across the river. The sum is..." He stopped. "It's three times what I make in a year."
"Paid to whom?" the old man asked.
